Recently, The State Department warned Americans against traveling to Japan, as the country has increasing coronavirus infections. Japan is issued level 4, the highest cautionary level –Do not travel-. Because of this, no international travelers are allowed in Japan, except for athletes who participates in the Tokyo Olympics. The Olympic games are scheduled on July 23rd with the Paralympics beginning on August 24th.
The U.S. Olympic Committee mentioned that athletes could compete safely in Japan. And the Japanese authorities said that the Japan’s cautionary level 4 would not affect the U.S. support for the Olympic games. However, Japan is actually in a serious condition. Tokyo and large parts of Japan are still under a state of emergency. Only 2 percent of Japanese population have fully vaccinated. In Osaka, doctors are warning that medical systems are collapsing, hospitals running out of spaces for patients. A lot of Japanese people are concerned that the Olympics would spread coronavirus due to an inflow of athletes around the world. About 80 percent of Japanese public believes that the Olympics should be postponed again or canceled.
